Border steps in for Buchanan

Sydney: Former Australia captain Allan Border has answered a last-minute request to coach Australia the tri-series in Nairobi following the withdrawal of John Buchanan who has a back injury.

He joined captain Ricky Pontingís 14-man squad on a flight out of Sydney on Monday for the tri-series that also features hosts Kenya and Pakistan.

Border, the Australia A coach and a national selector, was called up after Buchanan suffered a back injury during the teamís training camp in Brisbane at the weekend.

Buchanan suffered lower back pain during training on Saturday and has not responded to treatment, the Australian Cricket Board said in a statement.

He is expected to recover within 10 days and will rejoin the national one-day squad ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy in Colombo that starts September 12. Border was to travel to Johannesburg on Tuesday with the A team for their seven-game series against South Africa A.

Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy head coach Bennett King will take over Borderís duties as the A sideís coach.

Australia play their first match on Friday against Pakistan.
