Calcutta, Aug. 26: The state Congress today called a day’s strike in the municipalities on September 13 to protest the government’s “economic blockade” against them.
Thirty of the 119 municipalities in the state are under Congress control.
The party today organised a march to Writers’ Buildings demanding the release of funds for the municipalities under its control. About 5,000 supporters began the march from Subodh Mullick Square but police dispersed them from Mission Row.
Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Manas Bhuniya said the party would organise sit-ins in front of all the municipalities on the morning of September 13 and lock their gates. “We shall not allow a single municipal employee or official to report for duty,” on that day,” he warned.
