Bindra selected for Khel Ratna

New Delhi: Shooter Abhinav Bindra has been selected for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for the year 2001 for his outstanding performance in international competitions.

Meanwhile, Ashok Dewan (hockey), Shahuraj Birajder (boxing) and Aparna Ghosh (basketball) have been selected for the Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime achievement in sports and games 2002, the government announced on Saturday.

Maiden title for Sunil Kumar

New Delhi: The Asian junior champion Sunil Kumar Sipaeya won his maiden circuit title as he defeated Vijay Kannan 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in the $10,000 ITF menís futures tennis tournament at the DLTA courts on Saturday. Sipaeya struck form straightaway, coming up with accurate serves and elegant forehands down the baseline.A classy forehand winner and service return in the third game showed his confidence but he had to wait till the seventh game to get his break.

Inquiry into fraud case

Milan: The Italian soccer federation was expected to look into the bizarre case of Brazilian forward Eriberto, who has reportedly admitted to playing under a fake name, age and documents for years.

Italian news reports said on Saturday that Eriberto, who has played in the Italian league for five years, travelled to Brazil this week to confess to his phony identity as a way to avoid criminal charges.

Eriberto is listed in Italian soccer books as Eriberto Silva da Conceicao, born in Rio de Janiero in 1979. The Rome daily Il Messaggero said his original name was Luciano Siqueira de Oliveira and that he is four years older than he claims. News reports said the player changed his name and age to join the junior team of Palmeiras when he was already too old. Corriere dello Sport Eriberto as saying he agreed to have his papers doctored.
