Twin protests stall traffic

Roadblocks at different parts of the city affected traffic movement on Saturday.

At the intersection of Rabindra Sarani and BK Pal Avenue, vehicles came to a standstill for over an hour in the afternoon when private bus drivers blocked the road.

An altercation between an auto-rickshaw driver and a bus driver resulted in the blockade. The demonstrators squatted on Gas Street, demanding action against the auto-driver. The blockade was finally lifted after the police intervened.

In another incident, members of the Calcutta district Congress staged a protest at the SP Mukherjee Road-Rashbehari Avenue crossing. They were demanding action against Union minister for parliamentary affairs Pramod Majahan for his involvement in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder.

The partymen demanded a high-level probe into the murder. They also burnt Mahajanís effigy. Vehicular movement came to a halt for over an hour because of the agitation. Later, police dispersed the demonstrators.
