Guwahati, July 21: 
Class-IV Kairang Lower Primary School Khumukcham Sanjoy Singh held aloft the winner’s trophy amidst thunderous applause, while Oxford High School, Aizawl received the Best School Trophy as the curtains were rung down on the second leg of The Telegraph Schools’ chess championship at the Vivekananda auditorium here Sunday.

Troilokya Nanda of Edith Douglas School was given the runner-up trophy. Sanjoy (9.5 points) and Troilokya (8.5 points) as well claimed best Under-7 and best Under-13 special prizes, respectively.

On the progressive score tie-break, Debanand Singh (8.5 points) of Baskandhi High School, Sashank Singh (8.5 points) and Jibananda Singh (8.5 points) of Jawahar Novodaya Vidyalaya were placed in third to fifth positions. Though N. Scientist of Lairiky Engbam High School also finished with 8.5 points, he had to content with sixth placing.

Nandan Buragohain (8 points) of Nazira Higher Secondary & Multi-Purpose School, Rajib Dhar (8 points) of Netaji Vidyapeeth Railway Higher Secondary School, Twinkle Daulaguphu (8 points) of Assam Valley School and Manas Pratim Hazarika (8 points) of Happy Child School were placed seventh to tenth. Best girl special prize went to Suranjan Talukdar (7 points) of Disneyland High School.

Ranbir Chakma (7 points), Lal Ruatsanga (7.5 points), Lalthangrima (7 points) and Lalnun Siama (6 points) in all collected 27.5 points to help Oxford High School bag the Best School Trophy.

Minister of state for sports & youth welfare Robin Bordoloi who was the chief guest on the occasion gave away the main prizes and trophies.

   

 
 
BHUTIA TO LEAD INDIA

Bhaichung Bhutia has been named captain of the 20-member Indian football team which will participate in the LG Cup in Vietnam. This was announced on Sunday night by the team’s project director Santo Mitra.

India take on Singapore on August 2 in their tournament opener. The meet finishes on August 10.

Nasir to assist Habeeb at Mohammedan Sporting

Nasir Ahmed was appointed Mohammedan Sporting’s goalkeeping coach on Sunday. Ahmed will officiate as chief coach in the absence of Mohammed Habeeb, who will travel with the IFA XI to South Africa. Meanwhile, club officials are understood to have expressed disappointment over the team’s defence force and are planning to recruit a defender, favourably from Africa.

Colts headed for SA

A 16-member colts team from the Sambaran Banerjee Cricket Academy will go on a tour of South Africa on September 19.

The tour, organised by the Academy in association with the East Zone Colts Cricket Club, will involve 15 matches, including three under lights and will get over on October 17.

The team, to be selected in the first week of August, will be pitted against South African U-17, U-19 provincial sides, Premier Division clubs and leading school and college teams in Johannesburg and Durban.

The Academy also revealed plans to send a similar side to the United Kingdom in June 2003.
