Calcutta, June 23: 
Bengal earned a gold, one silver and two bronze medals on the concluding day of the 29th national junior aquatic championships in Chennai Sunday.

The boys’ waterpolo team claimed the gold medal defeating Maharashtra 8-5 in the finals. However, the Bengal girls lost their final match to Maharashtra 4-2. Amrapali Das Gupta claimed two bronze medals in the 200 metre back-stroke and 100 metre free-style events.

It was learnt that three boys and six girls from Bengal were chosen in the national waterpolo team that will take part in the Asian swimming championships. Meanwhile, according to agency reports, Karnataka boys and girls stamped their authority as they swept the pool extending their lease on best swimmers, team and overall titles.

A total of 19 new meet records were set out of the 56 events held and Karnataka swimmers accounted for 15 them. They were adjudged best swimmers in all categories — Rehan Poncha (group-1 boys); Arjun Muralidharan (group-2 boys), Shikha Tandon (group-1 girls) and V. Shivaranjani (group -2 girls).

Karnataka claimed the overall team championship with a tally of 558 points.

Namchi soccer

St George school and hosts Namchi Public School moved into the finals of the Eveready Cup inter-school soccer tournament being held at Sikkim. In the semi-finals Saturday, St George scraped past SAI Namchi 7-6 in the tie-breaker while Namchi Public School demolished Rabangla senior secondary school 5-2.

Super League

The Super League will commence from July 3, the IFA Governing Body decided Saturday.
