SLAB SUB-JR CHAMPIONS

Calcutta, May 26: 
Kunal Chowdhury’s fine all-round performance helped Sports Lovers Association of Bengal (SLAB) lift the Pepsi CAB Ambar Roy sub-junior tournament under lights at the Eden Gardens Sunday. In the final, they beat Sonarpur Sporting Union Sports Academy by eight wickets.

Man-of-the-Match Chowdhury scored an unbeaten 55 of 57 balls that helped SLAB overhaul a target of 142 in 24.5 overs. Earlier, he had taken one wicket and taken two catches.

For the Sonarpur team, Rudrajit Dutta scored 53 while left-arm spinner Saif Ali took three for 29.

Rudrajit was named the best batsmen of the tournament while Saif wasthe best bowler and Koushik Brata Purakayit of SLAB the best fielder. Incidentally, he took two wonderful catches in the final itself.

It was learnt that the CAB wants to bring down the number of teams for the tournament from the next year.

The CAB is also trying to procure grounds at Siliguri where they intend to host some of the A. N. Ghosh Trophy matches.

l Pankaj Saha and Bikram Nayak emerged champions in the 50 and the 60 kg categories of the men’s senior grade in the LG state karate meet. Bishnu Bhagwan Sharma came first in the 55 kg category. Among senior women, Sujata Dasgupta came first while in the under-18 girls event, Sruti Choudhury was best.
