Calcutta, May 24: 
The state government has decided to do away with the tradition of sending a delegation to the World Cup.

Finance minister Dr Asim Dasgupta said the chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, sports minister Shubhas Chakraborty and he had collectively taken the decision.

“It had been our policy to cut down on extra expenditure in every sector, and this was a part of that policy only,” explained Dr Dasgupta.

The government had been sending teams to World Cup finals since 1986.

Last time, a 13-strong party went to the finals held in France.

IFA’s floodlight plans

The IFA is planning to host some of the Super Division and Group A matches of the Calcutta League under floodlights. Talking to reporters, IFA joint-secretary Ranjit Gupta said: “Efforts are on to reactivate the flood-lights at the Mohun Bagan ground.”

Meanwhile, newly appointed IFA president Arun Poddar said that VSNL will take a satellite slot from July which will cut down the expenditure of ESPN and help them beam matches live.

Bagan’s catch

Nigerian defender Yakubu signed the inter-state transfer certificate in favour of Mohun Bagan Friday. He was with Bengal Mumbai Football Club last season. Bungo Singh left Bagan for Salgaocar. Bhratri Sangha’s Abhijit Mondal joined Dempo.

U-14 meet

Chandan Nagore Shiksha Niketan won the IFA under-14 football tournament at the Mohun Bagan ground Friday. In the final, they beat siliguri Tarai Tarapada Vidyalaya 2-1.
