IFA-minister meeting on galleries

The wooden galleries at the Maidan grounds of the city’s Big Three clubs — Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting — may soon become a thing of the past. The rickety stands will be the subject of Wednesday’s meeting between IFA joint secretary Ranjit Gupta and state finance minister Dr Asim Dasgupta. The move to do away with the wooden galleries had been hanging fire for quite some time for a variety of reasons, including a paucity of funds. The meeting with Dr Dasgupta is expected to pave the way for the eventual phasing-out of these galleries. The IFA also gets three new assistant secretaries — Dilip Sengupta, Sanjib Chakraborty and Santu Das. Suhas Bose retains his berth.

School football

The winners of the inaugural IFA inter-district (under-14) school meet will be flown to South Korea on a five-day trip to watch one of the World Cup quarter final matches. This was disclosed at a press conference organised today by the IFA and ETV, which is sponsoring the meet. With the pre-quarter final leg, in which 290 teams from 18 districts participated, having been completed, the eight quarter finalists will be playing in the city from Wednesday.
