WESTERN RLY CHAMPIONS

BY A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta, April 28:
Western Railway upset Air India to emerge champions in the L.P. Ganguly womenís cricket tournament at the Eastern Railway Sports Complex at James Long Sarani Sunday. Western Railway beat Air India by eight runs in a closely contested final.

Batting first, Western Railway piled up 186 for five in 45 overs. Arundhati Kirkire scored a brisk 73 of 89 balls, studded with eight fours. She was ably supported by Sulakshana Naik (30).

Chasing 187 for victory, the much-fancied Air India team fell just short of the target finishing at 178 for eight in the stipulated overs. Purnima Rao held the innings with an unbeaten 76 of 105 balls, but it was not enough to guide her team to victory.

However, Indian captain Anjum Chopra did not play the game because of a pulled muscle and this weakened the Air India team considerably.

Western Railway bagged a cash prize of Rs 7,500 while Air India earned Rs 4,000. Arundhati Kirkire was named the Woman of the Match while Purnima Rao of Air India became the Woman of the Series.

Mithali Raj of South Central Railway was named the best batswoman of the tournament while Mamta Kanojia wasthe best bowler and Anju Jain the best fielder.
