KUMBLE MAY BE CAPTAIN

BY LOKENDRA PRATAP SAHI

Calcutta, April 24:
Dropped in the Port-of-Spain Test, Anil Kumble should soon be back in business. In fact, the star leg-spinner could even captain India in the three-day game against Busta XI.

The match, in St Lucia, begins Friday. As already announced, the out-of-favour Ridley Jacobs will lead Busta XI.

Incidentally, the St Lucia game is India’s last fixture outside the Tests and ODIs in the West Indies.

According to The Telegraph’s sources, the Big Four —captain Sourav Ganguly, vice-captain Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Jawagal Srinath — are all likely to be rested.

The captaincy, then, will probably go to Kumble — who, earlier this year, (successfully) led India in the Chennai ODI versus Nasser Hussain’s England.

Of course, also in ‘contention’ for the stand-in job could be V.V.S.Laxman, Man of the Match in Port-of-Spain.

Meanwhile, the Indians will reach St Lucia late on Wednesday.

BAGAN IN A SPOT

BY A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta, April 24:
Mohun Bagan found themselves in an uncomfortable position at stumps on day one of the J.C. Mukherjee semi-final match against Kalighat Wednesday. Kalighat left-arm spinner Murtaza Lodhgar bowled a fine spell for five wickets that sent Mohun Bagan packing for 213 in 78.3 overs. Sanjeeb Sanyal also chipped in with a lively spell of medium pace bowling to take three wickets. At close, Kalighat, were four without the loss.

Bagan started well with openers Subhomoy Das and Mainak Sengupta looking in good touch. But both got out in quick succession. The apparently strong middle-order of the Bagan team, with Devang Gandhi and Sanjib Goel, once again failed to deliver.

Laxmi Ratan Shukla’s 29 and Madhusudhan Acharya’s 42 were the only bright spots in the Bagan innings. Goutam Chakroborty, known to open the innings with distinction, was sent in at number ten.

Brief Scores — Mohun Bagan 213 in 78.3 overs (Madhusudan Acharya 42, Laxmi Ratan Shukla 29; Murtaza Lodhgar 5/61, Sanjeeb Sanyal 3/66) Kalighat 4/0. Match to continue.
