TITLE FOR SCHWARTZEL

BY A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta, Feb. 17:
The Eveready amateur golf championship title today went to South African Charl Schwartzel who beat India’s Manav Das 11 and 9 to win on the 27th hole over the Royal Calcutta Golf Club course.

There was a hint of early competition, as Das returned Schwartzel’s first hole birdie with one on the second. Thereafter, though, the South African reeled off birdies — fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth and 10th — while Das was bogged down in sad bogies — eighth, 10th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 18th. That gave Schwartzel a huge 10-point lead after the first round. In the second round too there was early competition by Das. Schwartzel birdied the 19th and Das did on the next but bogeyed the one after. Das was back to winning the 22nd, but that joy was shortlived as Schwartzel recovered to race to title.
