SAPTARSHI COMPLETES HATTRICK

Calcutta, April 17: 
Saptarshi Roy today completed a hattrick of titles in the state junior chess championship, beating Ayan Lahiri to emerge champion in the meetís 29th edition.

Playing black, he wrested the initiative early in the final-round match following a mistake committed by the latter on the 12th move. Pranjal Chakraborty and Kumar Saha finished second and third.

In the sub-junior section, Kumardeep Chakraborty, Ayan and Somak Palit tallied six points each, but the former was declared winner on better progressive score.

ďThis win is special to me since itís my hattrick win,Ē Saptarshi said. He conceded that his match against Kumardeep Chakraborty, who in the end clinched the sub-junior title, was the toughest one.

Saptarshi lost only once, to Pranjal Das, in the penultimate round yesterday. His finished with seven points. Saptarshi, a standard X student of Dum Dum Kishore Bharati School, has won the state championships in different sections eight times.

Baisakhi Das clinched the womenís title yesterday.

   

 
 
SOURAV WALKS FOR A CAUSE

Calcutta, April 17: 
Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, football greats P.K. Banerjee and Sailen Manna today joined about 10,000 others in a walk from Taratala to Behala Chowrasta, appealing for peaceful assembly polls in the state. They also protested the rising crime-graph in Behala.

Title for Rajasthan

Rajasthan Club emerged champion in the first division volleyball league, routing Bijoyee Sangha 27-25, 25-5 and 25-3 in their last match today. Praveen Kumar, Subhankar Chakraborty and Indranil Chatterjee were the architects of Rajasthanís victory.

Lawn bowling

Punjab A edged Lake Club 14-13 while Punjab D beat Calcutta SC 18-11 to reach the semi-finals of inter-club lawn bowling meet at RCGC. In other quarter-finals, Punjab C beat Dalhousie AC 15-8 and Hindustan Club overcame Lake Land Country Club 15-9.

In the semi-finals, Punjab A will meet Punjab D while Hindustan Club take on Punjab C. The final will be played on Friday.

   

 
 
BENGAL TO PLAY FROM QUARTERS

Calcutta, April 17: 
Bengal will begin their campaign from the quarter final league in the national womenís football meet on May 18 ó six days after the meet starts in Ludhiana. About 30 players will undergo trials under coaches Indrani Sarkar and Shukla Dutta from tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the IFA joint secretary Ranjit Gupta informed the AIFF has sought rules and regulations of the proposed India Cup. Once the clearance comes, the IFA will send official invitations to the participating teams. The IFA will approach at least five European clubs for the meet, Gupta said.
