RESULTS: St Xavier’s bt Patha Bhavan 2-0 (S. Sukul bt S. Bikash Sen 6-1; 6-0. V. Swarup bt B. Deb 6-0; 6-0). La Martiniere bt Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan 2-0 (A. Rajgharia bt A. Roy 6-3, 6-4; H. Singh bt S. Sigtia 6-2, 6-0). St James’ bt AG Church School 2-0 (S. Nath bt A. Khan 6-3, 6-4; V. Bajpai bt Adnan Khan 6-0, 6-1). Don Bosco bt Calcutta Boys’ 2-1 (V. Oberoi bt U. Goswami 6-0, 6-1; N. Mohinta lost to S.Bose 3-6, 7-5, 3-6; Oberoi-Mohinta bt Goswami-Bose 7-6 (7-5), 6-1).

Merchants’ Cup

Another edition of the Merchants Cup tennis meet, first held way back in 1930, will be staged at the South Club from Monday. The meet, which ends December 7, has attracted 11 corporate houses for the team championship and 32 pairs for the ‘corporate doubles’, an event introduced only this year.

With Enrico Piperno, Tejbir Bhandari and Saurav Panja in their ranks, defending champions and sponsors IBP start favourites.

‘Double’ for Bluejays

Bluejays completed a ‘double’ in junior division meets organised by the Women’s Basketball Association of West Bengal when they became the inter-club knockout champions today. Bluejays, who had beaten Suffees in the play-off final of the league last week, crushed Rakhi Sangha 54-32 in the knockout final at the WBBA courts today.

Powered by strong batting performances in the top-order, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Kalighat Club registered huge wins in A.N. Ghosh Trophy matches today. Rohan Gavaskar hit an unbeaten 148 for East Bengal, Humza Firozie got 110 for Kalighat while Deep Dasgupta missed his century by four.

At Kalighat ground: East Bengal (296 + 27 penalty for 2 overs short) 323 for 6 (45 overs) (Rohan Gavaskar 148 n.o., Ajay Verma 65, Gautam Shome 50). Eastern Railway 233 for 9 (45 overs) (Shib Sagar Singh 4/33). East Bengal won by 90 runs.

Dhruv Agarwal shocked Yusuf Mirza 3-1 (59-50, 63-21, 13-71, 59-48) in the state snooker championship at YMCA (College) today. In another match, Mudit Poddar beat Intekhab 3-1 (40-49, 53-34, 53-41, 79-19).

SBI inter-circle football

The State Bank of India’s inter-circle football meet gets underway at the SAI Eastern Centre on Saturday. Thirteen ‘circles’, among them defending champions North East (Guwahati) and strong contenders Bengal, will be taking part in the eight-day meet.

There will be ample international flavour, Amit Das and Aloke Das lending some to Bengal. Xavier Pius and Santo Mitra are ‘spotters’ for the SBI all-India team.

Uttam Singh Mundy shot a five-under 67 today to emerge sole leader after Round II of the Surya Nepal Masters golf meet in Kathmandu.

According to information received here, Mundy’s second-round tally was eight-under 136 and he had a two-stroke lead over Vijay Kumar, who set a course record of six-under 66. Nepal’s Deepak Acharya was third at four-under 140.
