It was day of upsets at the 66th state table tennis championship in Haldia today as men’s and women’s top seeds fell. According to information reaching here, defending men’s champion Ranabir Das, not seeded this time, fought back to stun Arup Basak 9-21, 11-21, 21-19, 21-14, 21-19 in the semi-final. He meets Shubham Chowdhury in the final.

In the women’s section, Nandita Saha of Siliguri accounted for top seed Anindita Chakraborty in the quarter finals before eliminating fourth seed Susmita Roy in the semis. South Calcutta’s Shinjini Mitra will be her rival in the final.

DEVANG SET FOR CAPTAINCY DEBUT

Calcutta, Oct. 20: 
Devang Gandhi will lead Bengal in Sourav Ganguly’s absence in the ensuing season. With international commitment likely to keep Sourav out of Bengal action for most of the domestic season, Devang is all set to make his captaincy debut.

The Bengal Ranji Trophy probables, meanwhile, continued to train at the CC&FC with last season’s stand-in captain Utpal Chatterjee missing for the third successive day. The veteran left-arm spinner, it was learnt, is stuck with office engagements.

Rohan Gavaskar, who arrived in the city last evening, joined practice today but will be leaving shortly to appear for his B. Com final examinations. He said he will be back soon after the exams get over on November 5.

Mohun Bagan won the Jayanti Biswas Memorial football tournament (under-17) in Port Blair, beating East Bengal 1-0 in the final. Raju Singh scored the goal from an 86th-minute penalty kick.

Gaurav Ghei won the HT ProGolf 2000 title after his third successive round of four-under 68 in Gurgaon today.

According to information received here, Ghei won Rs 1,29,600 with a total of 18-under 270. Jyoti Randhawa came second at 11-under 277 and bagged Rs 89,600.

Calcutta’s Arjun Atwal was third at 10-under 278 for Rs 50,400 and Vishal Singh, fourth at nine-under 279 to settle for Rs 40,800.

Jarnail remembered

The IFA today held a condolence meeting for legendary defender Jarnail Singh at the Calcutta Referees’ Association tent. Sailen Manna and Chuni Goswami were among those present.

CEDRIC PIOLINE CONFIRMS

Calcutta, Oct. 20: 
Experienced Frenchman Cedric Pioline, currently placed at No. 13 in the ATP Tour Champions’ Race, will be one of the top draws at the Gold Flake Open to be held at Chennai’s Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium from January 1-7.

This will be Pioline’s second visit to India. At last year’s Gold Flake Open, the 30-year-old made the semis before being surprised by German Markus Hantschk.

A two-time Grand Slam runner-up (’93 US Open and ’97 Wimbledon), Pioline has won two titles this year — Rotterdam in February and Monte Carlo in April.

UNI reports from Delhi: Calcutta boy Manoj Sewa was beaten 0-6, 3-6 by Tejeshwar Chigateri in the sub-junior boys’ quarter final of the DSCL national junior meet today. Top seed Vikrant Sane wasted three match-points before bowing 2-6, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8) to Rishi Behl.

Priyanka Parekh, third seed in the girls’ sub-junior event, made the semis beating Parul Goswami 6-0, 6-1. Rupesh Roy was blanked 0-6, 0-6 by Karan Rastogi in boys’ under-14, while Assam’s Abshuman Dutta lost 2-6, 3-6 to Tushar Liberhan.
