Top seed Arup Basak suffered a humiliating 8-21, 18-21, 9-21 defeat against club-mate Amit Das in the men’s quarter final of the Kalyan Jayant memorial state-ranking table tennis meet at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra today.

The 16-year-old from Narkeldanga Sadharan Samity, however, went down 21-23, 17-21, 21-23 to Sourav Chakraborty in the semi-final. Chakraborty will meet national junior champion Ranabir Das in the title-round. Das overcame Siliguri’s Prithwiraj Bose 21-14, 22-24, 21-17, 21-18.

The women’s final pits former senior national champion Poulami Ghatak against reigning champion Mouma Das. It promises to an absorbing contest.

While Poulami had it easy against Kasturi Chakraborty, another former national champion, winning 21-16, 21-17, 22-20, Mouma had to work hard against Nandita Saha before winning 20-22, 21-17, 11-21, 21-15, 23-21.

Boys’ semis: Sourav Chakraborty bt Niloy Basak 21-2, 21-8, 21-11. Amit Das bt Jayanta Chanda 21-11, 21-13 (conceded). Girls’ semis: Sushmita Roy bt Munmun Basak 21-19, 21-12, 21-10. Mousumi Pal bt Nandita Saha 21-19, 21-18, 21-11. Cadet Boys’ final: Soumyajit Sarkar bt Soumya Nandy 21-13, 21-14.

Football transfers

Dipendu Biswas finally signed in favour of East Bengal after getting the clearance from UB Group yesterday. Wing-back Ratan Singh renewed allegiance with the red-and-gold team who also roped in FC Kochin goalkeeper Nasim Akhtar. Eastern Railway retained Raju Mondal.

Super Division league

Holders East Bengal are likely to begin their Super League campaign against George Telegraph on July 19. Mohun Bagan are expected to meet SAIL in their opener on July 14, while Mohammedan Sporting take on FCI on July 11. Tollygunge Agragami face SAIL on July 12.

Barren draws

The first division group B matches between Kalighat Friends and Bally Protiva and Bowbazar YMU and Victoria SC both ended goalless.

In second division action, L. Murmu’s hattrick helped IBAC beat Calcutta Gymkhana 3-0.

Howrah school best

Sri Ramkrishna Sikshalaya, Howrah, beat South Point by 35 runs in Berhampore yesterday to emerge champions in the CAB Dattu Phadkar inter-school under-19 meet.

BRIEF SCORES: Sri Ramkrishna Sikshalaya 123/5 (20 ovs) (Dibyendu Chakraborty 47, Sourasish Lahiri 41). South Point 88/8 (20 ovs) (Santosh Das 3/12, Dibyendu Chakraborty 2/15). Sri Ramkrishna Sikshalaya won by 35 runs.
